Real Madrid great Álvaro Benito announces cancer diagnosis
The former player and commentator revealed the news on social media
Benito, who played for Real Madrid from 1995 to 2004, made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday.
“Today I want to share with you that I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer,” Benito wrote. “It is a difficult moment, but I am facing it with optimism and determination.”
Benito, who is now a commentator for Real Madrid TV, said he will undergo surgery next week.
“I want to thank my family and friends for their support, and I also want to thank the doctors and nurses who are taking care of me,” Benito wrote. “I am confident that I will overcome this challenge.”
Benito’s announcement has been met with an outpouring of support from the football world.
“Álvaro, we are all with you in this fight,” Real Madrid tweeted. “We send you all our strength and support.”
“Álvaro, you are a warrior and you will overcome this,” former Real Madrid player Iker Casillas tweeted.
Benito’s diagnosis is a reminder that cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States, after skin cancer.
The good news is that prostate cancer is often curable if it is caught early.
Men over the age of 50 should talk to their doctor about getting a prostate cancer screening.
Early detection is key to successful treatment.
We wish Álvaro Benito all the best in his fight against cancer.
